Astros Call Up Pitcher Named Santa to Save Struggling Bullpen

The Houston Astros just found an early Christmas miracle for their struggling bullpen, and his name couldn't be more perfect.

Meet Alimber Santa, a 23-year-old right-hander joining the team this weekend in Chicago after dominating at Triple-A Sugar Land. With a 1.42 ERA and a fastball hitting 94 mph, Santa is bringing much-needed relief to baseball's worst bullpen.

The timing couldn't be better. Houston's relief pitchers currently have a 5.72 ERA, dead last in Major League Baseball. They've lost key relievers to injuries and moved others to different roles, leaving the team desperately searching for answers.

Santa's arrival represents something bigger than just roster moves. After signing from the Dominican Republic in 2020 for $75,000, he pitched only 23 innings in his first three years due to the pandemic and elbow inflammation. Most players would have faded into obscurity after such setbacks.

Instead, Santa persevered. Following a rough 6.06 ERA in his first two full seasons, he completely transformed his game in 2025. His slider and sweeper have become nearly unhittable, with left-handed batters managing just three hits in 22 attempts against him this season.

The Bright Side

Santa's journey shows how patience and persistence can turn potential into performance. The Astros believed in him through injuries and struggles, inviting him to Major League camp and watching him represent the team at last year's Futures Game. Now their faith is being rewarded at exactly the right moment.

The bullpen reinforcements keep coming too. Pitcher Nate Pearson just returned from injury and threw the hardest pitch by any Astros pitcher this year at 99.9 mph. Closer Josh Hader is working his way back and should return in early June.
