At 70, Fashion Editor Finally Becomes Just Bella

For most of her life, Isabella Niehaus wore labels that belonged to other people. She was the daughter-in-law of a famous radio presenter, the wife of a singer, Sarie magazine's fashion editor, and the mother of a world champion kitesurfer.

Now, at nearly 71, she's finally claiming the identity she always wanted: Bella.

The South African cookbook author revealed this transformation at a Penguin Random House event in Cape Town this week. "All I wanted to be all my life was Bella," she told the crowd, explaining why her latest cookbook is titled "Bella's Kitchen." The room burst into applause.

Her journey to self-discovery came through cooking. After a high-flying career in fashion, Niehaus found a new passion in the kitchen, publishing several cookbooks including two vegan titles that won international acclaim at the Gourmand world cookbook awards.

But this latest book is different. "I wanted to do something for me," she explained. "I wanted to celebrate Bella."

The cookbook's cover tells its own charming story. After trying green bowls, white bowls, and silver bowls for the photo shoot, photographer Lindy Kriek finally said, "Just put the bloody tomatoes in your arm." The result became what might be the most gorgeous South African cookbook cover of the year.

Bella's story reminds us that it's never too late to bloom into ourselves. She wears only black now, with a river of silver bangles shaking on her left arm, and has created a home where she teaches her 40-year-old son Taro to cook with handfuls of thyme instead of sprigs.
