Atlanta Celebrates Juneteenth with Black-Owned Businesses

Atlanta's Juneteenth celebrations brought together history, community, and Black entrepreneurship in a powerful display of unity and freedom.

About 20 Black-owned businesses set up at Paschal's Restaurant and Bar on Friday to mark the holiday honoring the end of slavery. Vendors like Michey's Italian Ice showcased their products at the legendary soul food spot that once served as a meeting place for Civil Rights leaders.

"Juneteenth really means freedom for our community, unity for our community," said Shanna from Michey's Italian Ice. "In these times, it's really important for us to stick together."

The choice of location added extra meaning to the celebration. Paschal's holds the distinction of being the longest-running Black-owned restaurant in Atlanta, according to director of operations Ernest Oliver.

The weekend festivities continued Saturday morning with the Juneteenth Atlanta Freedom Day Parade and Festival at Piedmont Park. The event brought together art, music, and community in celebration of both historical freedom and present-day progress.

The Ripple Effect

Jessica Myers, a Juneteenth Atlanta host committee member, sees the celebration as more than just a look back at history. She views it as fulfillment of her ancestors' vision for future generations.

"This is the moment our ancestors have prepared us for," Myers said. "They've paved the way for us to showcase the art, celebrate freedom and embrace peace."

The parade serves as a living showcase of those values, bringing together Atlanta residents to honor the past while building community for the future. By centering Black-owned businesses at historic locations like Paschal's, the celebration connects economic empowerment with cultural heritage.

The multi-day event demonstrates how communities can honor difficult histories while creating joyful, forward-looking traditions that bring people together in shared celebration.
