Aussie Donates Rare Blood 545 Times at 85 Clinics

Feel Good

Trevor Bergman just completed an incredible cross-country journey, donating life-saving rare blood across every single Red Cross donor center in Australia. His 545 donations carry a precious antibody that protects newborn babies from fatal complications.

Trevor Bergman turned routine road trips into a nationwide mission of mercy, rolling up his sleeves in 85 different clinics to save vulnerable lives. His extraordinary journey has given hundreds of mothers and their unborn infants a healthy future.

The 59-year-old police officer from Melbourne recently completed a rare feat by giving blood at every Australian Red Cross Lifeblood center in the country. Over his lifetime, Bergman has made 545 donations, crisscrossing the continent from sunny coastal towns to remote outposts in Darwin.

What makes Bergman's gift so vital is what flows through his veins. He is one of only about 150 people in Australia known to produce the rare anti-D antibody.

Doctors use this specific antibody to create medication for pregnant mothers with Rh-negative blood who carry Rh-positive babies. Without anti-D treatment, a mother's immune system can view her own baby's blood cells as foreign threats, triggering hemolytic disease of the newborn.

The idea for this continent-wide blood drive began simply during a holiday trip to Perth. After stopping by a local clinic to give his regular donation, Bergman realized that tracking down regional centers was a fantastic way to explore the beauty of Australia.

He drove up the sun-drenched east coast, traveled through the dusty outback, and stopped at every community hub in between. Even a minor setback in Albany, where nurses turned him away for having a temporary sniffle, could not slow his resolve.

Bergman reached his final milestone in Canberra, where Australia's Governor-General Sam Mostyn joined him at the clinic to donate alongside him. With one in three Australians needing blood products at some point in their lives, his persistent generosity offers a shining roadmap for others to follow.

The Ripple Effect

A single donation containing anti-D antibodies can safeguard multiple pregnancies, meaning Bergman's hundreds of visits have shielded thousands of tiny lives before their first breaths. His decade-spanning travel route proves that whenever we look for opportunities to serve others, adventure and compassion go hand in hand.

Every drop shared across thousands of miles reminds us that one dedicated person can quietly lift an entire nation.
