Austin Launches Zero-Interest Loans for Entrepreneurs

Starting a business in Austin just got a whole lot easier for people who've been told "no" by banks.

The city launched its first Kiva Hub on March 24, partnering with the global nonprofit to offer microloans between $1,000 and $15,000. The game changer? Zero percent interest, no fees, and no minimum credit score required.

Austin Economic Development teamed up with Kiva to break down the walls that keep underserved communities from accessing capital. Every entrepreneur accepted into the program gets paired with a local Capital Access Manager who provides hands-on guidance through the application and beyond.

The funding comes from everyday people, not big banks. Community members can chip in as little as $25 to back local business owners, directly supporting job creation in their own neighborhoods.

Austin now joins a global network of Kiva Hubs working to strengthen local economies through community lending. It's one of only two designated hubs in Texas, and the numbers prove the model works: more than 90% of Kiva borrowers successfully fund their loans through the platform.

"Business funding should not be out of reach," says Anthony Segura, Deputy Director of Austin Economic Development. "Partnering with Kiva showcases our shared commitment to empower small business owners, regardless of background."

The Ripple Effect

Since 2005, Kiva has channeled $1.8 billion into real dreams across 90 countries, supporting 4.7 million borrowers. Over two million people worldwide have invested in entrepreneurs through the platform.

Austin's hub extends beyond just money. The Small Business Division manages the program as part of a growing suite of services for local entrepreneurs, connecting them to coaching, events, and resources.

The city will spotlight the Kiva Hub during Austin Small Business Week from May 4 to 8. A dedicated session on microloans and funding paths happens May 7, giving aspiring business owners a chance to learn how the program can work for them.
