Nigeria's Air Travel Soars 12% to Become Africa's 4th Hub

More than 18.8 million travelers passed through Nigerian airports in 2025, marking an impressive 12% jump from the previous year and securing Nigeria's position as Africa's fourth-largest aviation market.

The milestone shows real momentum in a country where aviation has faced challenges. Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of Nigeria's Federal Airports Authority, shared the numbers Tuesday at a major aviation conference in Abuja.

The growth tells a bigger story about African aviation. While the continent represents 18% of the world's population, it handles just 1% of global air traffic. That gap is finally starting to close.

Recent data from the International Air Transport Association shows African airlines grew international passenger demand by 6.4% in July 2026, even as global demand declined. Overall passenger demand in Africa jumped 5.2%, second only to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Nigeria is leading the charge. The country's flagship Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos saw the fastest growth among Africa's 10 largest airports, with scheduled seat capacity surging 24% in September.

Several factors are driving the expansion. Currency reforms have stabilized operations, new aircraft leasing arrangements have made planes more accessible, and international airlines are returning with renewed confidence. Multiple carriers have resumed Nigerian routes since the current aviation minister took office, with more expected soon.

The Ripple Effect

The passenger numbers represent far more than statistics. Each flight carries families reuniting, entrepreneurs building businesses, patients accessing better healthcare, and students pursuing education.

Nigeria's 1.19 million scheduled airline seats for September 2026 represent a 37% increase over the previous year. For a nation of 220 million people served by 28 airports, the growth shows the country is finally tapping its aviation potential.

The Federal Airports Authority isn't resting on these wins. The agency recently earned ISO quality and environmental certifications, trained over 3,500 staff through international programs, and modernized infrastructure while keeping airports running. Digital systems now speed check-ins, automate passport gates, and enhance security.

Kuku acknowledged the journey ahead remains long. Nigeria records just 19.5 million passengers annually despite its massive population. But she framed the gap as opportunity, not obstacle.

African aviation is on the move, connecting a continent ready to claim its place in global travel.
