That's exactly what's happening this weekend in Austin. The city's downtown streets will align perfectly with the setting sun on Sunday, creating a phenomenon locals call "Austinhenge."

The effect happens twice a year in early August and early May. When the timing is just right, the sun shines directly down east-west streets, creating tunnels of brilliant light that feel almost otherworldly.

Austin isn't alone in celebrating these astronomical alignments. New York has Manhattanhenge, San Francisco celebrates California Henge, and Chicago marks its own special days. They're all named after England's ancient Stonehenge, which was built to align with the sun at the solstices.

Will Best, an astronomy researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, explains why Austin's "henge" days don't fall on the equinoxes. The downtown streets tilt slightly northwest to southeast rather than running perfectly east to west.

"It's six months apart if the grid is exactly east-west," Best said. "The tilt-off changes that."

Different Austin neighborhoods experience their perfect alignment on different days because each area's street grid tilts at a slightly different angle. East downtown streets aligned best on August 7, while streets near UT's campus had their moment on August 8.
