Between 5pm and 8pm, when families crank up heaters and cook dinner, the grid used to lean heavily on gas plants. Not anymore. In August 2026, batteries met 49% of evening power needs, up from less than half a percent in 2020. Gas fell from nearly 66% to just under 21% in the same stretch.

Half a million Australian households installed home batteries under a government subsidy program, while massive grid-scale batteries kept coming online. The Ripple Effect

Wholesale electricity prices dropped as batteries took over peak hours, putting money back in household budgets. The Australian Energy Market Operator reported gas generation hit its lowest second-quarter average in more than two decades, with declines across every region.
Alison Reeve, energy director at the Grattan Institute, says this transformation is reshaping how Australia thinks about power. Batteries are flattening out the daily demand curve, making the whole system more stable and predictable.
Gas isn't disappearing entirely. Australia still needs backup power for those cold, dark winter weeks when solar panels produce less and wind dies down. But gas generators are shifting from everyday workhorses to strategic reserves, firing up only when renewables can't carry the load alone.
That transition brings challenges. Gas plants will run less often but need to remain ready, changing their economics completely. The sooner energy planners adapt to this new reality, Reeve says, the smoother the shift will be.
Australia's 20-year energy roadmap already anticipates this future, with gas playing a flexible backup role focused mainly on winter months in southern states. The country is learning to manage a grid powered primarily by sunshine, wind, and batteries with fossil fuels waiting in the wings.
What looked impossible six years ago is now Australia's new normal, proving clean energy transitions can happen faster than anyone dares to hope.
