Australia Hits 500,000 Electric Cars in 16 Years

One in four new cars sold in Australia last month ran purely on electricity, marking a stunning shift in how the country moves.

The nation just hit 500,000 battery electric vehicles on the road, a milestone announced by the Electric Vehicle Council on World EV Day. It took 16 years to get here, starting with the first electric car available in 2010, but the pace is accelerating fast.

August set a monthly record, with electric cars capturing 24.9% of new vehicle sales and becoming the largest single fuel type for the month. For the first time ever, petrol and diesel vehicles together fell below half of all new car sales.

The transformation comes down to dollars and sense. Drivers are saving about $3,000 per year by going electric, making it one of the most effective ways to cut household costs while helping the environment.

Almost 200 electric models are now available across Australia, giving buyers real choice whether they want a compact city car or a family SUV. That variety, combined with falling prices, means more people can find an electric vehicle that fits their needs and budget.

The Ripple Effect

The electric vehicle boom is creating change far beyond individual driveways. Dealerships and repair shops across the country are upgrading their equipment and training to serve the surge in electric customers.

The Australian Government's latest DRIVEN rebate helps businesses cover up to 80% of costs for EV-specific tools and workshop upgrades, up to $50,000. Mechanics are learning new skills, and service centers are transforming to meet demand that's already walking through their doors.

The shift is even changing Australia's energy landscape. More electric cars mean more demand for charging infrastructure, sparking coordinated planning for apartment buildings, rental properties, businesses and regional communities that need reliable access to charging.

The next challenge is scaling up. Australia aims to reach five million electric vehicles by 2035, which means adding another 4.5 million in the next decade. That requires faster growth than the current pace, but industry leaders say it's achievable with continued policy support and expanding charging networks.

Julie Delvecchio, chief executive of the Electric Vehicle Council, sees the milestone as proof the transition is working. When people realize the financial savings alongside environmental benefits, the choice becomes clear.
