Australia Opens 5 GW Clean Energy Tender Worth Billions

Australia is taking a giant leap toward a cleaner energy future with the launch of its ninth Capacity Investment Scheme tender, targeting 5 gigawatts of new renewable power generation. That's enough capacity to power roughly 2 million homes with wind and solar energy.

The tender opens opportunities for renewable energy developers across most of Australia's National Electricity Market, with specific allocations ensuring regional balance. Tasmania will receive 300 megawatts of new generation, while Victoria gets 1.6 gigawatts with careful planning to complement solar projects with other renewable sources.

What makes this tender special is its commitment to Indigenous communities. A dedicated 500 megawatt allocation is reserved exclusively for projects that partner with First Nations groups, requiring at least 5% equity participation or revenue sharing arrangements.

Projects must be at least 30 megawatts in size and ready to operate by the end of 2030. Developers have until July 2026 to register, with winning bids announced in November 2026.

The Ripple Effect

This tender represents more than just new power plants. It's part of Australia's ambitious goal to build 26 gigawatts of renewable generation by 2030, fundamentally transforming how the country powers itself.

The program is already delivering results. To date, the Capacity Investment Scheme has secured contracts for 74 solar, wind, and battery storage projects totaling nearly 25 gigawatts of generation capacity. That's roughly equivalent to 20 large coal power plants worth of clean energy.

These projects create thousands of construction jobs in regional areas while building energy infrastructure that will serve communities for decades. The First Nations partnership requirement ensures Indigenous Australians share directly in the economic benefits of projects on their traditional lands.

The timing coincides with results from an earlier tender round, showing the government is maintaining momentum. Another tender for energy storage capacity is opening next month, ensuring renewable power can be stored and delivered when needed most.
