Australia Sends Firefighters to Help France Battle Blazes

Australia is deploying specialized firefighting aircraft and 24 expert crew members to France this week, responding to devastating wildfires that swept through 42,000 hectares of forest near Bordeaux.

The massive blazes forced nearly a quarter of a million people to evacuate their homes and vacation sites. While cooler, humid air allowed two-thirds of evacuees to return home by week's end, hot spots continue smoldering across the scorched landscape.

France isn't alone in battling extreme heat and fires this summer. The United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Greece, and Turkey have all fought significant blazes as El Niño supplies additional heat into Earth's atmosphere.

Australia's response includes a CH-47D Chinook helicopter equipped with an 11,300-litre water tank and a Bell 412 reconnaissance aircraft, accompanied by ground and aerial crew from the New South Wales Rural Fire Service.

Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain emphasized the friendship between the two nations. "Australia has some of the finest firefighting capability on the planet and we are only too happy to do whatever we can to assist, just as France came to our aid during the 2019-2020 Black Summer Bushfires," she said.

That reference matters. When catastrophic fires ravaged Australia during Black Summer, France was among the international partners who stepped up to help.

French firefighters will benefit from Australia's hard-won expertise in battling massive blazes. The NSW Rural Fire Service developed world-leading techniques during decades of fighting bushfires across challenging terrain.

Local residents like 64-year-old Jean-François Pauner know how vital this help is. Armed with just a watering can and bucket, he's been moving from one flare-up to the next. "This is the first fire I'm experiencing real-time, and I can tell you it's vicious," he said, describing how fires keep restarting despite repeated extinguishing efforts.

The international collaboration extends beyond France and Australia. Firefighters across Europe are sharing resources and expertise as they battle simultaneous blazes from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
