Colorado Fire Rescue Graduates 4 After Intense Training

Four new firefighters in Colorado just earned their badges after completing the toughest training program their department has ever created.

Roaring Fork Fire Rescue celebrated its first formal graduating class on Thursday at Station 41 in Basalt. Travis Sugg, Ian Fradl, Joshua Snyder, and Nolan Sawtelle spent an entire month proving they could handle whatever emergencies come their way.

This wasn't just paperwork and orientation. Lt. Ryan Clark designed a grueling four-week program that pushed the recruits through 14-hour training days covering everything from engine operations to wildland firefighting.

"These guys have been through the wringer for the last month," Clark told the gathered crowd of department leaders and fellow firefighters. The new program marks a major shift from the old one or two-week onboarding process.

The recruits tackled a full week of engine company operations, another week on truck operations, two days of rescue training, four days of wildland firefighting, and two intense days in the burn tower. Every minute was designed to prepare them for the real emergencies they'll face starting next week.

Fire Chief Scott Thompson couldn't hide his excitement during the ceremony. "They are going to be able to go on shift and start working almost immediately," he said. "We are pretty excited."
