Australia Solar Hits Records as Waste Drops by Half

Australia's solar farms are producing more clean energy than ever and wasting far less of it, marking a turning point for the nation's renewable grid.

In August 2026, three Australian states set new records for solar power generation. New South Wales led the pack with 684 gigawatt hours, followed closely by Queensland at 665 gigawatt hours and Victoria at 213 gigawatt hours.

Even better news: the amount of solar energy being curtailed, or thrown away because the grid couldn't use it, dropped dramatically. Only 9% of available solar generation went unused last month, down from 18% the year before. That means the grid is getting much better at absorbing clean energy when the sun shines brightest.

Combined with wind power, Australia's large utility scale renewable farms generated nearly 5 terawatt hours of electricity in August. That's enough to power millions of homes with zero emissions.

Queensland's solar farms performed especially well. The top three facilities all achieved a 28% capacity factor, including the impressive Haughton Solar Farm and the 204 megawatt Edenvale Solar Park. Up in the state's far north, the Kidston project also made the top three.

Meanwhile, Western Australia's Flat Rocks wind farm led all wind projects nationwide with a 51% capacity factor, proving renewables can deliver consistent power across different technologies and regions.

The Ripple Effect

The momentum isn't slowing down. More than 1,000 megawatts of new solar farms and battery storage reached financial close in August alone, meaning construction will soon begin. These projects include massive battery systems that can store sunshine for nighttime use, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges.

Two neighboring solar farms, Ganymirra and Majors Creek, will add 300 megawatts of generation plus storage batteries capable of holding 1,200 megawatt hours. Other battery projects in New South Wales and Queensland will help capture even more renewable energy that would otherwise go to waste.

This progress shows how quickly Australia's energy system is evolving. Just a year ago, nearly one fifth of solar generation was being curtailed because the grid couldn't handle it. Now that figure has been cut in half thanks to better grid management and growing battery storage capacity.

The benefits extend beyond emissions reduction. These renewable projects create jobs, lower electricity costs over time, and prove that large scale clean energy systems can work reliably. As more batteries come online, curtailment rates should keep dropping while renewable generation keeps climbing.
