The momentum isn't slowing down. More than 1,000 megawatts of new solar farms and battery storage reached financial close in August alone, meaning construction will soon begin. These projects include massive battery systems that can store sunshine for nighttime use, solving one of renewable energy's biggest challenges.
Two neighboring solar farms, Ganymirra and Majors Creek, will add 300 megawatts of generation plus storage batteries capable of holding 1,200 megawatt hours. Other battery projects in New South Wales and Queensland will help capture even more renewable energy that would otherwise go to waste.
This progress shows how quickly Australia's energy system is evolving. Just a year ago, nearly one fifth of solar generation was being curtailed because the grid couldn't handle it. Now that figure has been cut in half thanks to better grid management and growing battery storage capacity.
