Australian Hospital First to Make Advanced Cancer Therapy

Cancer patients in Western Australia just got a reason to hope closer to home.

Royal Perth Hospital received approval from Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration to manufacture two revolutionary cancer treatments: CAR T-cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, or TILs. The hospital is the only facility in Australia authorized to produce TIL therapy.

CAR T-cell therapy works by reprogramming a patient's immune cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells. It's already transforming outcomes for people battling certain blood cancers.

TIL therapy takes a different approach. Doctors extract immune cells already fighting inside a patient's tumor, multiply them by the millions in a lab, then return them to the body as a supercharged army. Early results show strong promise for melanoma and other solid tumors that have been harder to treat.

Until now, Australians needing these therapies faced impossible choices. Traveling overseas for treatment meant leaving family behind during the scariest time of their lives. Some patients couldn't make the journey at all.
