Mining operations in Australia's remote outback are achieving something many experts thought impossible: running heavy industrial equipment on nearly 100% renewable energy in places with no power grid to back them up.
Perth-based energy company Zenith Energy reports that its hybrid power systems at remote mine sites are consistently delivering over 80% renewable energy. Some operations are doing even better.
At Lynas Rare Earths' Mount Weld facility in Western Australia's Goldfields, renewables powered 95.7% of operations during the first quarter of 2026. The site saved more than 870,000 liters of diesel compared to the previous year by combining solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage.
Bellevue Gold's mine site hit an even more impressive milestone in February 2026. The facility achieved 93.8% renewable energy for the entire month and ran for 155 consecutive hours on purely renewable power with all diesel generators completely shut off.
That's more than six days of continuous mining operations without burning any fossil fuels.

At Liontown's Kathleen Valley lithium project, the renewable system delivered 82% clean energy over a six-month period. These aren't small operations either: the hybrid plants range from 40 MW to 90 MW in total capacity, enough to power thousands of homes.
The Ripple Effect
What makes these achievements remarkable is where they're happening. These mines operate in some of Australia's harshest conditions, with no connection to the electrical grid and zero tolerance for power interruptions.
Chief Executive Hamish Moffat of Zenith Energy says the success challenges common assumptions about renewable reliability. "These are critical industrial operations that require power around the clock," he explains. "If high-renewable energy systems can perform reliably in remote mining operations, it broadens the discussion around what's achievable across the wider economy."
Mining companies are investing in these systems for practical reasons beyond environmental goals. Renewable hybrids reduce exposure to volatile diesel prices, eliminate complicated fuel logistics to remote sites, and improve energy security.
The results prove that industries with massive energy demands can transition to clean power today, not decades from now. If renewable energy can reliably run a mining operation in the middle of the Australian outback, the technology is ready for far more applications than previously imagined.
