Australian Scientists Create World's First Quantum Battery

Imagine plugging in your electric car for just a few minutes and driving away with a full charge, or tapping your phone to a charger and watching it power up in seconds.

Australian scientists at CSIRO just made that future a step closer to reality. They've built the world's first working quantum battery, a breakthrough that could transform how we power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles.

The prototype charges wirelessly using a laser that converts light into electric current. In testing, it stored energy for six times longer than it took to charge up.

Lead researcher Dr. James Quach says conventional batteries are hitting their limits. By harnessing quantum mechanics, batteries could become vastly more powerful and charge dramatically faster.

"My ultimate ambition is a future where we can charge electric cars much faster than fuel petrol cars, or charge devices over long distances wirelessly," Dr. Quach said.

The timing couldn't be better. More than 250,000 Australian households installed home batteries last year under a federal discount scheme. Electric vehicles hit a record 11.8 percent of new car sales in February.

This breakthrough arrives as Australia pushes quantum technology as a national priority. The country is already home to cutting-edge quantum projects, including a utility-scale computing facility in Brisbane and advanced circuit technology in Victoria.

The research team acknowledges significant challenges remain. They need to scale up the technology and extend how long it holds a charge. But they're actively seeking partnerships with venture capital firms and electric vehicle manufacturers to accelerate progress.

Dr. Quach notes they've come remarkably far since quantum batteries were just theoretical concepts in 2013. The team published their results in the scientific journal Light: Science and Applications.

The potential payoff extends beyond convenience. As the world transitions to renewable energy and electric everything, faster-charging, more powerful batteries become essential infrastructure.
