Australian Solar Glass Now Generates Power and Cuts Heat

Imagine if every office building window could power the lights inside while keeping rooms comfortable and bright. That future just took a giant leap forward.

Australian company ClearVue Technologies solved a puzzle that's been holding back energy-generating windows for years. Their see-through solar glass can now be manufactured using the same equipment and processes that factories already use for regular windows.

The breakthrough centers on a special coating that keeps buildings cool by blocking solar heat. Until now, adding this coating to solar glass required completely different manufacturing processes that made the technology impractical for most builders. ClearVue found a way to apply the coating after the solar cells are already embedded in the glass, using standard industry equipment.

"This removes a practical barrier for the industry," said ClearVue CEO Doug Hunt. "It means energy-generating glass can be considered alongside conventional façade products, rather than requiring an entirely separate design or manufacturing process."

The company's Gen 3 solar glass generates more than 50 watts of power per square meter while letting in 80% of visible light. You can see through it almost as clearly as regular glass, but it's quietly making electricity the whole time.

What makes this especially clever is where the heat-blocking coating goes. ClearVue places it on the room-facing side of double-paned windows, where it works best to keep interiors cool. Other solar glass products need triple-paned windows with the coating in a less effective spot.

The company tested their process at a major glass factory in Germany, running their solar panels through the same production line as regular glass. No special adjustments needed. No new equipment required. It just worked.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't just about one company's product getting better. When clean energy technology fits into existing manufacturing systems, it becomes accessible to the entire construction industry overnight.

Architects can now design buildings with power-generating windows without learning new specifications. Glass factories can produce solar panels without buying new machinery. Building owners can generate their own clean electricity without sacrificing the performance features they expect from modern windows.

ClearVue's timing couldn't be better. The company recently secured major international certifications and got their rooftop solar panels approved for government rebate programs in Australia. Buildings of the future might generate significant power from surfaces we never thought could help, all while looking like regular glass towers.

Hunt put it simply: "For energy-generating glass to become widely used, it needs to fit within the systems the industry already understands and trusts."

Now it does, and that changes everything for how we think about the buildings around us.
