Australia's Big Batteries Cut Gas Use to 25-Year Low

When record heatwaves slammed Australia this summer, something remarkable happened: the grid didn't flinch, and fossil fuels barely budged.

Rooftop solar panels across the country soaked up the blazing sun and turned it into power just when air conditioners were working overtime. The Australian Energy Market Operator's first quarter report for 2026 shows that renewables now supply 46.5 percent of electricity across the eastern states, up from 42.5 percent last year.

But the real star of the show? Batteries.

Grid-scale battery capacity doubled compared to last year, and these giant power banks are changing everything. They're storing sunshine during the day and releasing it during the evening peak when families come home to cook dinner and turn on lights.

That simple shift crushed demand for gas-fired power plants. Gas generation dropped more than 25 percent from last year, hitting the lowest quarterly average since 1999.

"What we're seeing is that batteries are able to meet that evening peak cheaper than gas," said Alison Reeve, program director at the Grattan Institute. That cheaper power means lower electricity bills for families, since wholesale prices make up about 30 percent of what you pay.

Coal use also declined, pushing total emissions down nearly 5 percent. Western Australia led the way with batteries regularly supplying more than 20 percent of electricity during peak periods.

The summer heat used to spell trouble for Australia's power grid. Heatwaves meant stressed systems, price spikes, and blackout fears.

Not anymore. Despite record temperatures battering South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales, the grid sailed through without major outages or supply issues.

The Bright Side

Here's where it gets even better for your wallet. The Australian Energy Regulator's draft pricing shows household electricity bills could drop between 1.3 and 10.1 percent starting July 1, depending on where you live.

Small businesses could see even bigger relief, with proposed decreases between 7.6 and 21.2 percent. Final pricing arrives May 26.

Bruce Mountain from the Victoria Energy Policy Centre said Australia just passed a turning point. "Summer peak daily production, other than in evening hours, has become a complete non-issue," he explained.

The country that once feared its brutal summers is now turning that pounding sun into its greatest energy asset.
