Electric vehicle charging at a public station along an Australian highway

Australia's EV Charging Network Grows 20% in One Year

😊 Feel Good

As electric vehicle sales hit record highs in Australia, the country's public charging network is expanding rapidly to keep pace. New technology and smarter infrastructure are transforming how Aussies power their clean rides.

Australia just sold nearly 25,000 electric vehicles in March alone, shattering previous records with a 69.6% jump from last year.

The surge comes as petrol prices climb due to Middle East tensions, pushing more Aussies toward electric alternatives. And while the country still trails behind EV leaders like China and the Netherlands, the charging infrastructure needed to support this shift is racing to catch up.

Australia's public charging network grew by at least 20% in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to the Electric Vehicle Council. The federal government is working to establish charging stations every 150km along major highways by the end of 2026.

Sydney resident Stephen Lightfoot bought his Volvo EV in late 2024 and loves charging at home for daily drives. But his first interstate trip to Canberra revealed gaps in the system, including witnessing frustrated drivers nearly fighting over access to a single available charger.

"We need more chargers in more places, every car park, every service centre along highways, every shopping centre," says Lightfoot, who also serves as vice president of the Australian Conservation Foundation. He calls expanded infrastructure "the treatment and cure for range anxiety."

Technology is closing the gap faster than expected. Modern EVs now offer ranges exceeding 700km on a single charge, compared to just 350km for earlier models.

Finn Peacock from SolarQuotes says his 2024 Tesla Model 3 clears 500km on one charge. "The extra 150km makes all the difference. I just get in and go. I regularly drive Adelaide to Melbourne."

Ultra-rapid charging stations that can add hundreds of kilometres in minutes are becoming common along major routes. Dean Postlethwaite from Sydney EV Chargers says this is shifting driver behavior from "charge when necessary" to "charge when convenient."

The Bright Side

Most of Australia's charging infrastructure already runs on renewable energy, since government funding requires clean power sources. This means the transition to electric vehicles is truly cutting carbon emissions, not just shifting them elsewhere.

Regional Australia is seeing major investment, with some areas now offering more reliable charging networks than major cities. And innovative solutions are emerging, like Ivygo, an Airbnb-style app allowing people to rent out their private chargers to other drivers.

Australia's clean transport future is charging ahead at full speed.
