Bastrop Nonprofit Awards 100 Scholarships for Trade Careers

Two friends in Bastrop, Texas decided five years ago that students heading into the trades deserved the same celebration as college-bound graduates. That simple idea has now turned into nearly 100 scholarships changing young lives.

Jack Prentiss and Justin Love founded Jack of Hearts to support high school graduates pursuing careers in welding, plumbing, electrical work, and other skilled trades. The nonprofit operates entirely on local business donations and two annual fundraising events, filling a gap for students whose talents might not fit the traditional college path.

"We want to keep giving back to our community and to these young men and women whose schools may not see them the same way we do," Love told the Bastrop City Council in July. "Everything that makes this country go around is because of these kids."

The organization has grown faster than the founders expected, bringing both opportunity and challenge. Rising costs for their annual scholarship banquet at the Bastrop Convention Center have strained their budget just as more students need support.

Clayton Tishler saw the impact personally when his son received a scholarship in 2023. He said the award delivered something beyond tuition money.

"They didn't just award him financial help; they made him feel seen and valued," Tishler explained. "That scholarship gave him confidence and direction. That's not just charity; that's community and compassion."

The Ripple Effect

Jack of Hearts represents a growing recognition that skilled trades offer stable, fulfilling careers without four-year degree debt. Every electrician, plumber, and welder they support helps keep communities running while building their own financial security.

The scholarships also validate students who might feel overlooked in college-focused school environments. When young people feel valued for their hands-on skills, they're more likely to pursue training with confidence and complete their programs.

Prentiss remains committed regardless of official support, but he knows community backing will help them reach more students. He's using the organization's success story to advocate for all Bastrop nonprofits facing similar growth challenges.

The nonprofit plans to continue expanding its scholarship program, determined to support every qualified student who applies. "We're going to be there to help others who need it at a great time," Prentiss promised, whether that's with city support or without.
