Battery giant CATL hit a major milestone on June 30th when it deployed its 2,000th battery swap station through its Choco-SEB network. The achievement is even more remarkable considering the company started 2025 with zero stations and has maintained a blistering pace of over 200 new deployments every single month.
The network now covers 180 cities across 31 provinces in China and Hong Kong. CATL isn't stopping there: the company aims to have 3,000 stations running by the end of 2026 and is eyeing major expressway routes connecting cities like Beijing to Tibet and Guangzhou.
Battery swapping solves one of electric vehicle adoption's biggest hurdles: charging time. Instead of waiting 30 minutes or more at a charging station, drivers can swap their depleted battery for a fully charged one in minutes, just like refueling a gas car.
CATL developed 10 new electric vehicle models with Chinese automakers that work with its swappable battery system. The company's ambitious goal is to replace up to a third of China's gas stations with battery swap locations.
The Ripple Effect
The technology is already jumping continents. CATL recently partnered with Octopus Energy to bring large-scale battery swapping to the UK and European markets, proving the model works beyond China's borders.

If the current pace continues, CATL will operate more than 4,000 battery swap stations globally by year's end. That's explosive growth from zero to thousands in under two years, showing what's possible when innovation meets infrastructure investment.
The expansion targets diverse locations including urban centers, tourist destinations, and commercial districts, making electric vehicles more practical for both daily commutes and long-distance travel.
