CATL Robot Centers Cut EV Battery Repair to 72 Hours
The world's largest battery maker is launching robotic repair hubs that can fix damaged electric vehicle batteries in three days instead of replacing them. The service could slash repair costs from $15,000 to under $1,500.
A fender bender shouldn't cost you $15,000, but that's exactly what happens when an electric vehicle battery gets damaged and needs replacing. CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, just announced a solution that could transform EV ownership for millions of drivers.
The company is rolling out robotic repair centers designed to fix damaged batteries in under 72 hours, with some mobile service trucks completing repairs in just 48 hours. Instead of swapping out the entire battery pack, technicians will repair individual damaged cells using automated systems.
The cost difference is staggering. CATL says repairs that currently require a $15,000 battery replacement could drop to around $1,480, cutting expenses to roughly one-tenth of what drivers pay today.
The company plans to expand this network to 100 cities worldwide by the end of 2026. CATL already operates 1,376 franchise centers across 84 countries, with locations in China, Norway, and Istanbul leading the way.

The Ripple Effect
This isn't just about saving money on repairs. It's solving one of the biggest headaches facing electric vehicle owners: the fear that minor damage means totaling their car.
Insurance companies in the United States and Europe have been writing off low-mileage EVs after small crashes because they couldn't properly assess battery damage. When the battery pack represents such a huge portion of the vehicle's value, uncertainty alone has sent perfectly good cars to the scrapyard.
CATL's mobile repair trucks can perform 30 different diagnostic checks and handle 50 types of on-site repairs, covering 90% of cases that don't need deep repairs. Robots at repair centers handle precision work like painting and adhesive application without human contact, ensuring consistent quality.
The timing couldn't be better. Data from Allianz in Germany shows battery-related damage makes up about 8% of insurance claim costs. As more people switch to electric vehicles, affordable repair options will help protect resale values and make EV ownership more accessible.
The new centers will service batteries beyond CATL's own lineup, meaning more electric vehicle owners could benefit regardless of their car's brand. When repairs become faster and cheaper, the entire electric vehicle market becomes more practical for everyday drivers.
