Bayonne Wins First Little League State Title in 38 Years

For the first time in their town's history, Bayonne's 12-year-old baseball players are New Jersey state champions.

The team crushed Blackwood Kiwanis 9-3 on August 3 at Crestron Field in Cresskill, launching six home runs in front of an overflow crowd. All nine runs came from going yard, with Mason Rincon smashing three solo shots and driving in five runs total.

Bayonne became just the fifth Hudson County team to win a Little League state title since 1957. The last time a Hudson County squad claimed the crown was Roberto Clemente of Jersey City back in 1988.

This group of players has been chasing this moment together since they were eight years old. They won a state championship at eight, then fell short in championship games at ten and eleven.

"This was the year that matters," said coach Justin Smith. "They all bought in and they worked hard for this."

Pitcher Chase Klimkowski earned the win with seven strikeouts over 5⅓ innings. Rincon closed it out in the sixth for the save, then added one of the other home runs alongside AJ Tapia and Owen Feliz.

The team swept through the double-elimination tournament undefeated, dominating opponents 98-16 across ten postseason games. Three of those victories were shutouts.

Why This Inspires

Rincon's words after the game capture what makes youth sports so powerful. "At the end of the day, my personal stats don't matter," he said after his three-homer performance. "All that matters is the overall outcome is a win."

These kids learned that persistence pays off. They stuck together through years of near-misses, supporting each other through losses and celebrating every small victory along the way.

Now they're heading to Bristol, Connecticut to face Darien, the Connecticut state champion, on August 8. The game airs on ESPN Plus at 7 p.m., and a win would push Bayonne one step closer to the Little League World Series.

"It's definitely been a journey," Rincon said. "I'm so happy to be doing it with this group of guys."

A town that's waited 38 years finally has its moment, and these twelve-year-olds are just getting started.
