Belgian Workers Find $10M in Gold Under Old Brewery

Imagine digging at your construction job and finding millions in gold beneath your feet. That's exactly what happened to workers in Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde, Belgium, this week when they discovered $10.4 million in gold coins and bars while building a new sewer line.

Eighteen-year-old worker Kobe thought he'd stumbled upon loose Euro coins at first. But as the crew removed part of the old brewery's foundation to lay pipe, they realized they'd hit something far more valuable.

"Our first reaction was actually disbelief, surprise," Kobe told VRT news. "Of course, we didn't expect to find gold."

Project leader Mario described the moment his workers started shouting about their discovery. He rushed over and held the gold in his own hands as more coins and bars kept appearing in the dirt.

"Only then did what we had found really dawn," Mario said. He immediately called his boss, then the police.

The workers did exactly the right thing. Local police arrived, carefully cataloged every piece, and transported the treasure to a high-security federal government vault for safekeeping.

Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the gold. If no one comes forward, the finders could receive compensation.

The Ripple Effect

The story gets even better. The old brewery building now belongs to an organization that provides welfare support to the Flemish community. The director told the BBC he hopes the gold can address "the enormous need we experience daily."

That means this unexpected windfall could transform lives across the region, funding programs that help vulnerable families, provide housing assistance, or support community services. What started as routine construction work might become a lifeline for people facing hardship.

Kobe admitted he'd love a finder's fee, and who could blame him? But Mario explained that keeping the gold was never really an option given the sheer amount they found.

"It would also be theft," he said simply.

Police have already warned treasure hunters to stay away from the site, which remains a fenced-off construction zone with dangerous pits. The gold is long gone anyway, secure in federal custody.
