Berlin Drag Festival Celebrates Queer Arab Joy

Feel Good

In Berlin, a creative collective called ADIRA is uniting queer Southwest Asian and North African artists through vibrant performances and uplifting gatherings. Co-founded by performer Hassandra, the community-led initiative provides a loving space where cultural heritage and joyful self-expression flourish side by side.

Under the dazzling stage lights of Berlin, an electrifying celebration of heritage and pride is giving performers a place to shine together as family. The grassroots collective ADIRA is transforming the city's creative scene by offering a joyous, welcoming home for queer Southwest Asian and North African artists.

Co-founded in 2023 by Lebanese-born artist Hassandra and Syrian-German DJ Zuher Jazmati, the group takes its name from a Levantine Arabic word describing someone strong and accomplished. That empowering spirit shone brightly at the third annual ADIRA Drag Festival, where performers paid loving tribute to iconic musical legends from across the Eastern Mediterranean.

Hassandra, who studied stage acting in Beirut before moving to Berlin in 2017, channeled beloved Lebanese pop star Elissa for the festival's vibrant lineup. Their performance wove together theater, humor, and tender nostalgia, allowing the artist to honor their roots while celebrating the complex humanity of childhood idols.

Beyond the glitter and spectacle of the stage, the collective hosts lively panel discussions, community workshops, and musical events that invite everyone to participate. These gatherings provide a nurturing sanctuary where people can embrace their full identities without compromise.

Why This Inspires

Creating spaces rooted in mutual respect allows diverse communities to flourish and discover remarkable strength in unity. In a fast-changing world, ADIRA models how art and shared joy can dissolve barriers and foster deep, lasting friendships.

The collective reminds us that our differences are meant to be celebrated, offering a reassuring sanctuary where anyone can feel seen and valued. Each show reinforces the idea that there is always room for every voice to be heard.

Together, these passionate creators are proving that when communities lift each other up, love and belonging will always triumph.
