Berlin Opens 72-Unit Affordable Housing for LGBTQ+ Women

Berlin just opened applications for something Europe has never seen before: an entire apartment complex designed exclusively for lesbian and bisexual women, with affordable rent and a discrimination-free promise.

The 72-unit building is the result of a decade-long dream by LGBTQ+ nonprofit Rad und Tat (RuT), which partnered with a state-owned housing organization to create safe, affordable housing for aging queer women. Applications opened in February and filled up completely within weeks.

Starting rent sits at €6.90 per square meter (about $7 per 10 square feet) for 41 subsidized units. The remaining apartments operate on a sliding scale based on income, ensuring accessibility for women at different financial levels.

The complex offers apartments ranging from one to four bedrooms. Eight units are specifically designed for women needing additional care support, including five wheelchair-accessible homes.

Beyond just housing, residents will have access to community events, counseling services, and a headquarters for RuT right in the building. There are plans for a café and event spaces to foster connection and combat isolation.

Why This Inspires

The project grew from a painful reality: aging lesbian and bisexual women had far fewer resources available than their gay male counterparts. Many faced fears of isolation in old age or living in senior facilities where their life stories would have no place.

"Here, lesbians and queer women will be able to live fulfilling lives and enjoy their later years in a discrimination-free and neighborly environment," the state housing organization explained in a press release. Local officials have thrown their support behind the initiative as a model for inclusive urban planning.

RuT managing director Jutta Brambach calls it "a pioneering project across Europe" that stands for visibility and gender equality. Construction began in 2023, and the doors officially open this August.

The organization has shared room tours and updates on social media, building excitement among future residents. They're also crowdfunding to ensure the community spaces and disability-accessible features meet their vision of truly inclusive living.

Ten years from dream to reality, this building represents more than affordable housing: it's proof that when communities identify gaps and advocate loudly enough, real change becomes concrete.
