Berlin startup designs smart train pods for night travel
A Berlin entrepreneur has created a revolutionary cabin design that could make overnight train travel affordable and comfortable for 700 passengers per train. The innovation tackles the biggest challenge keeping Europe's eco-friendly night trains from replacing short flights. #
Imagine boarding a train in Paris, working at your personal desk, then converting it into a private bed with the push of a button, and waking up in Berlin for less than a plane ticket costs.
That vision is getting closer thanks to Anton Dubrau, a Berlin founder who launched Luna Rail in 2024. His startup designed individual sleeping cabins that could transform overnight train travel from a luxury expense into an everyday option.
Current night trains face a brutal math problem. A regular high-speed train carries 918 people, but traditional sleeper cars only fit 254 passengers. That means fewer ticket sales to cover the same operating costs, making routes expensive to run and pricey for travelers.
A 1,000 kilometer trip from Paris to Berlin currently costs about $213 for a shared five-person compartment or $522 for a private cabin. Those prices push most budget-conscious travelers toward cheap flights instead.
Dubrau's prototype cabin flips that equation. The design fits 60 individual pods into one train car, stacked across two floors. A full 14-car train could carry 700 passengers.
Each pod offers genuine privacy with a workspace, storage shelves, coat hooks, and luggage space. The seat back lowers at the touch of a button to become a bed at night. During the day, it functions as a mini office, making the trains attractive to business travelers too.

The cabins could be installed in decommissioned trains that already exist, avoiding the massive expense of building new vehicles from scratch.
Why This Inspires
Night trains nearly disappeared from Europe as highways and budget airlines took over. But climate-conscious travelers are demanding them back, with activists demonstrating in pajamas at 12 European train stations to call for more routes.
People want the environmental benefits without sacrificing convenience or emptying their wallets. Research shows price is the top factor people consider when choosing how to travel.
Luna Rail's innovation could finally make the sustainable choice the easy choice. Passengers would skip airport hassles, sleep through the journey, and arrive refreshed in a new city at a price that competes with flying.
The design proves that green alternatives don't require sacrificing comfort or paying premium prices. Sometimes the barrier to progress isn't desire but simply smart engineering that hasn't been invented yet.
More capacity means lower ticket prices, and lower prices mean more people choosing trains over planes for those overnight European adventures.
