Bihar Gives Fast Bowlers Police Jobs for Cricket Success

For the first time ever, athletes in Bihar are stepping into high-ranking government positions based purely on their sporting achievements, and two national cricket heroes are leading the way.

Indian fast bowlers Akash Deep and Mukesh Kumar received appointment letters as Deputy Superintendents of Police on Friday in Patna. They were among 19 national and international athletes who secured government jobs through Bihar's "Medal Lao, Naukri Pao" scheme, which translates to "Win a Medal, Get a Job."

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary called it a historic moment for the state, noting that no athlete had ever been appointed to a position as senior as DSP before. The program directly addresses one of the biggest fears that keeps talented young people away from sports careers: financial uncertainty.

Athletes who win medals at national and international competitions now qualify for positions ranging from deputy police superintendents to sub-inspectors and panchayati raj officers. The jobs come with financial security, social recognition, and performance-based cash awards.

Bihar isn't stopping at job security. The state government is launching a talent scouting campaign starting September 15 that will identify promising athletes at the village level. Selected athletes will receive systematic training, ensuring rural talent gets the same opportunities as their urban counterparts.

The state is also building world-class infrastructure to support its athletic ambitions. The Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna is being redeveloped with 40,000 seats and facilities capable of hosting international competitions, with operations managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The Ripple Effect

The transformation goes beyond the 19 athletes who received jobs this week. Young people across Bihar are starting to see sports as a legitimate career path rather than a risky hobby. Parents who once pushed their children away from athletics are reconsidering as government commitment becomes concrete.

Sports officials report a noticeable morale boost among athletes training in the state. Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh emphasized that no talented athlete should be held back by lack of resources or fear about their future.

The chief minister expressed confidence that Bihar athletes will soon compete on the world's biggest stages, from the Olympics and Asian Games to the World Cup and IPL, bringing glory to both their state and country.

Bihar is betting that when you remove the financial fear from pursuing excellence, you unlock potential that's been waiting for its chance to shine.
