Bill Gates' Nuclear Plant Gets US Approval with Korea Tech

America just greenlit its first commercial advanced nuclear reactor, and it's bringing together the best minds from two continents to make clean energy faster and safer.

TerraPower, the nuclear startup founded by Bill Gates in 2008, received federal approval to build a groundbreaking small modular reactor (SMR) plant. Unlike traditional massive nuclear facilities, SMRs are compact, cheaper to build, and designed with enhanced safety features that could revolutionize how we generate carbon-free electricity.

The project is a true international collaboration. South Korea's major industrial players have invested heavily in making this happen. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power secured a stake in TerraPower, while HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed on to help commercialize the technology. Doosan Enerbility will manufacture key reactor components, bringing decades of Korean nuclear expertise to American soil.

Gates met with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won in Seoul last August, cementing partnerships that now form the backbone of this historic project. SK Innovation and SK Inc. joined forces with their Korean and American partners to push the technology forward.

Construction actually began last June in Wyoming, where TerraPower broke ground on the facility. The site will demonstrate whether this new generation of reactors can deliver on its promise of safe, reliable, clean energy at a fraction of the cost and time of conventional nuclear plants.

The Ripple Effect

This approval represents more than one power plant. South Korea is discussing a possible $200 billion investment package in the United States, with NuScale Power's SMR project in Tennessee potentially included. The technology transfer goes both ways, strengthening energy security and climate solutions for both nations.

Small modular reactors could be game changers for reaching carbon neutrality goals. They can be factory-built and assembled on site, dramatically reducing construction time and costs. Their compact size means they can fit in locations where traditional nuclear plants never could, bringing clean baseload power to more communities.
