Birmingham Tutors Change Lives With Just One Hour Weekly

Grace Howard expected to help a student read better. What she didn't expect was how much one hour a week would mean to both of them.

Howard volunteers with STAIR of Birmingham, a nonprofit that pairs elementary students with reading tutors for free, one-on-one sessions. She spends 45 minutes each week with her student Jonathan at Tuggle Elementary, working through sight words, patterns, and short books together.

The program serves more than 14 Birmingham City Schools, bringing trained volunteers directly to students who need extra reading support. Each child meets with tutors once or twice a week to build literacy skills and confidence in a relaxed, encouraging environment.

Howard grew up with teachers who made reading an important part of her life. She wanted to pass that gift along to a new generation, even though she'd never tutored children before.

STAIR made it simple. After a short application and one to two hours of training, she was matched with Jonathan and given a structured curriculum, books, and all the materials she needed. No teaching experience required.

The weekly sessions became about more than phonics and spelling. Howard and Jonathan read together, chatted about the stories, and sometimes just laughed. Those small moments of connection added up to something bigger.

The results speak for themselves. After joining STAIR, 100% of families reported their children improved in reading. Another 97% saw better grades overall, and 98% noticed a boost in their child's self-esteem.

For Howard, watching Jonathan gain confidence made every minute worthwhile. "Nothing is better or more satisfying than watching your kid grow and improve," she says.

Right now, STAIR needs tutors at Martha Gaskins Elementary, Oliver Elementary, Oxmoor Valley Elementary, and Huffman Academy. Sessions happen in the early afternoons, and volunteers can choose one or two days per week.

Howard understands if people feel nervous about signing up. "It's easy and fun," she promises. "It's very low commitment, only taking around an hour per week."

One hour each week to show up, listen, encourage, and celebrate the wins—that's all it takes to help a Birmingham child discover the magic of reading.
