Bishop Calls for Prayer as Gaza Peace Deal Takes Shape

Religious leaders are rallying hope around a breakthrough agreement that could transform life for millions in Gaza.

Bishop A. Elias Zaidan, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on International Justice and Peace, expressed cautious optimism about a new agreement brokered by a U.S.-led Gaza Board of Peace. "I am heartened by news of an agreement which aims at the disarmament of Hamas and Israel's military withdrawal from the Strip," Bishop Zaidan said in his statement from Washington. He called for intense prayers to support the delicate negotiations ahead.

The agreement's framework includes provisions that could finally give Palestinian people what the principles statement calls "a credible political path that achieves self-determination and Statehood." This represents a potential turning point after decades of conflict.
