To test their discovery, the scientists disabled Cx50 in normally sighted surface fish in the lab. The fish quickly experienced eye shrinkage and degeneration, confirming they'd found the genetic switch for vision loss.
The findings reveal something even more fascinating about Caballo Moro's history. Genetic analysis shows that fully eyed fish invaded this cave roughly 3,300 to 4,300 generations ago and interbred with blind cavefish already living there. Their descendants still split into two distinct forms with only a handful of intermediates.
"At first glance one wouldn't be able to tell the difference," said co-author Nicolas Rohner, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Münster in Germany. But the eyed fish behave more like cavefish despite having vision, staying aggressive and territorial in the bright zone where sight gives them an advantage.
