Blind Paralympian: My Wife Is My Greatest Achievement

When blind big wave surfer and Paralympic cyclist Matt Formston sat down to list what he wanted in a wife, he had an uncomfortable realization. He wasn't even half the things he expected from someone else.

So in 2008, he started working on himself. By 2010, he'd landed his first executive job and started riding for Australia. And he met Rebecca, who goes by Bex.

They met online when Bex had just moved from the UK to Sydney. She sat down at a crowded beach wearing a blue hoodie, waiting for her blind date to find her. Matt wandered around looking awkward until he spotted her.

At lunch, Bex handed him the menu. "I can't read it," Matt said. That awkward moment kicked off a relationship that would change both their lives.

A month later on a camping trip, Matt's entire family showed up unannounced. Bex didn't flinch. On the drive home, they got stuck in a traffic jam and she just chatted away without complaining.

"I fell in love with her in that traffic jam," Matt says.

The early years tested them hard. Their first baby arrived mid-training campaign for the Paralympics. Bex was 26 with no family nearby while Matt spent his paternity leave on his bike.

When their son was eight weeks old, Matt left for Mexico for two weeks. "When my legs wouldn't go and I couldn't breathe, I just thought about Bex at home with the baby without me and no one was beating me," he says. He set a world record on that trip.

They've now welcomed three kids while Matt built a resume spanning multiple pages of achievements. But he gives the credit elsewhere.

What makes this story shine isn't the world records or championship titles. It's Matt's honesty about who made them possible.

"I've got a list of achievements that fill up more than a couple of pages, but I didn't have any of them until I met Bex," he says. "She's my bedrock. She's allowed me to do all the things I'm able."

Bex says life with Matt is busy and exciting, with different adventures always on the horizon. But what matters most is the foundation underneath. "The relationship is safe and reliable. Even though he's crazy, I trust him."

For a man who surfs giant waves without sight and races bikes at Olympic speeds, the biggest win came from that awkward beach meeting and a traffic jam where he stopped looking for perfection and found partnership instead.
