Blood Test Detects Breast Cancer Return 8 Months Early

Scientists have developed a blood test that spots breast cancer coming back months before it appears on traditional scans, and it works without needing tissue from the original tumor.

Researchers at The Institute of Cancer Research in London tested the new approach on people with triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive form that affects 8,000 women yearly in the UK. The blood test detected cancer DNA an average of 7.9 months before standard hospital scans caught it.

Here's what makes this different. Current liquid biopsy tests require tissue samples from the original tumor to create a personalized test for each patient. But sometimes there isn't enough tissue left after initial testing, or the sample quality isn't good enough to develop the test.

The new "tissue-free" test skips that step entirely. It works just as well as the personalized version but can help far more people since it doesn't need those tissue samples.

The team compared both approaches using blood samples from the C-TRAK TN clinical trial. They found that detecting cancer DNA in the blood strongly predicted whether someone's disease would return, regardless of which test method they used.

This breakthrough could reshape how doctors monitor breast cancer survivors. If ongoing trials show that catching recurrence this early helps patients live longer, the test could become standard practice after treatment.

Senior scientist Isaac Garcia-Murillas explained that removing the tissue requirement makes these powerful tests available to more patients. Breast Cancer Now, which funded the research, emphasized the urgency for the 8,000 women diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer each year.

The findings, published in JAMA Oncology, bring researchers closer to personalizing follow-up care based on each person's actual risk of recurrence rather than general statistics.
