Blue Origin's TeraWave to Beam 6Tb Internet From Space

Imagine download and upload speeds so fast that entire data centers can operate from anywhere on the planet, even the most remote locations.

Blue Origin just announced TeraWave, a new satellite internet network that will deliver up to 6 terabits of bidirectional bandwidth starting in late 2027. That's roughly 6,000 times faster than most home internet connections today.

The network will use 5,408 satellites working together across two orbital layers. Most will orbit close to Earth, while 128 specialized satellites in medium-Earth orbit will handle the massive 6-terabit connections that make the system special.

Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp says TeraWave is "purpose-built for enterprise customers." That means this isn't competition for your home internet, it's designed for bigger fish like hospitals running telemedicine in rural areas, government agencies needing secure communications, and companies operating in places where fiber optic cables can't reach.

The company plans to serve around 100,000 customers rather than millions. This focused approach lets them promise reliable, ultra-high-speed connections for critical operations that can't afford downtime.

The Ripple Effect

Think about what this could mean for communities far from major cities. A hospital in rural Alaska could access the same medical imaging and consultation tools as one in New York. Researchers in the Amazon rainforest could upload terabytes of climate data in minutes instead of weeks.

Disaster response teams could set up full communications hubs anywhere within hours. Countries building their digital infrastructure could leapfrog expensive ground cables entirely.

Blue Origin is launching these satellites on their New Glenn rockets, which successfully completed test flights in 2025. The multi-orbit design means satellites can relay signals between each other using laser connections, creating a web of high-speed paths across the sky.

While SpaceX's Starlink focuses on bringing basic internet to everyday users and Amazon's Leo network targets both consumers and businesses, TeraWave is carving out a different niche entirely. It's infrastructure for the infrastructure.

The space internet race just got more interesting, and the real winners will be organizations doing critical work in places the world forgot to wire.
