Boca Raton Beach Cleanup Brings Community Together Sept 19

When you pick up trash at the beach, you're doing more than cleaning sand. You're collecting data that could stop pollution before it starts.

Boca Save our Beaches is bringing the International Coastal Cleanup to South Beach Park on Saturday, September 19th from 9am to 11am. Volunteers will gather under a lime green tent to tackle litter while joining a global movement spanning over 100 countries.

Registration is required because space fills up fast. The event happens at 400 N State Road A-1-A in Boca Raton, and parking fees get waived for cleanup volunteers who tell the guard they're with the group.

Organizers ask volunteers to bring reusable water bottles instead of single use plastics. The irony of bringing more plastic to a cleanup isn't lost on anyone. They also recommend sunscreen, comfortable shoes, and hats for the South Florida heat, though all cleanup gear gets provided.

Here's where it gets interesting. Every piece of trash collected gets counted and logged into the Clean Swell app. At least one person per group needs to download the app before arriving and enter the group name "Bocasob."

Counting every bottle cap and cigarette butt might seem tedious, but this data tells a powerful story. The information reveals exactly what types of litter end up on beaches and helps researchers identify patterns. Those patterns lead to solutions that prevent trash from reaching the ocean in the first place.

Previous cleanup efforts in the area have removed hundreds of pounds of litter, with one recent Boynton Beach event pulling 184 pounds of trash and 21 pounds of recyclable plastic from a single park.

The beach will look better after two hours of work, and the data will help keep it that way for years to come.
