Bogota Metro Hits 80% Complete, Opens Next Year

Bogota is finally getting the metro system it's waited decades to build, and the finish line is in sight.

Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan announced that Metro Line 1 reached 80.37% completion by the end of June 2026. The project has moved forward without major delays, marking the beginning of its final construction phase before trial runs begin in September 2027.

The numbers tell an impressive story. Workers have now built more than 16 kilometers of the 24-kilometer elevated viaduct that will carry trains across the city. The line will eventually stretch 23.9 kilometers from the Bosa Depot to 72nd Street and Caracas Avenue.

In one of the most technically challenging operations yet, construction crews recently lifted and installed viaduct span number 511. The structure measured 30 meters long and weighed nearly 500 tons, making it the heaviest load moved during the entire project. Two massive cranes, each capable of lifting 600 tons, worked in perfect coordination to position the 11-segment structure with precision.

The Ripple Effect

This metro line represents far more than concrete and steel. It's transforming how Bogota's residents see their city and its future.

A 2026 citizen survey revealed stunning levels of enthusiasm: 95% of residents now believe the metro is actually becoming reality, and 9 out of 10 feel optimistic about what it will bring. After years of traffic congestion and limited transit options, hope is building along with the infrastructure.

The city has already opened the Calle 26-Atrio station for full service, the first newly constructed station operating while building continues around it. Residents even got to name three stations themselves, choosing Ciudad Kennedy, Timiza, and Santa Isabel.

Beyond the tracks and trains, Mayor Galan launched the Metropolitan Waves program through Decree 229. The initiative will strengthen pedestrian connectivity and public spaces around the metro line, creating walkable neighborhoods that extend the project's benefits beyond just transportation.

Thousands of workers, engineers, technicians, and professionals show up every day to make Colombia's most important infrastructure project a reality. With less than 20% of construction remaining, that collective optimism continues growing alongside the viaduct itself.
