Ethiopia Hits Record $10.2B in Exports, Completes Major Dam

After 14 years of construction, Ethiopia just completed one of Africa's most ambitious infrastructure projects and capped it off with its highest export earnings in history.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam officially opened this year, marking a major milestone in the country's push for energy independence. State Minister Kebede Desisa described the achievement as transformational for Ethiopia's development goals.

The economic wins didn't stop there. Ethiopia earned a historic $10.2 billion from exports during the year, while government revenue jumped 67 percent to exceed 1.5 trillion Birr. That's an increase of more than 600 billion Birr compared to the previous year.

Foreign investment surged alongside domestic growth. More than $4.4 billion in foreign capital became operational, while investors signed agreements worth $13.2 billion at a national investment forum. Many of those projects have already moved into implementation.

Construction also launched on the Bishoftu International Airport, a $12.5 billion project designed to become Africa's largest aviation hub. Foundation work began on new fertilizer plants and nuclear power facilities, expanding the country's strategic infrastructure portfolio.

Agricultural productivity increased throughout the year, strengthening food security. Manufacturing output grew as large-scale industries came online, boosting both the volume and variety of Ethiopian products reaching global markets.

The Ripple Effect

The economic gains are creating opportunities across multiple sectors. Mining, tourism, the digital economy and renewable energy have all emerged as growing contributors to national expansion.

The government launched more than 100 one-stop service centers nationwide to improve public access to government services. Tourism sites were developed and opened, while urban and rural development projects advanced across the country.

Ethiopia also strengthened its financial position through debt restructuring and increased foreign currency reserves. The country maintained a second consecutive year without direct central bank financing while working to control inflation.

To celebrate the year's achievements, Ethiopia designated its five-day Pagume period to "Ethiopia's Renewal," with each day focusing on different national priorities. Activities include free medical care for 150,000 citizens, blood donation drives, educational support and food programs for low-income families.

The momentum from 2018 sets a strong foundation for Ethiopia's continued economic expansion and development goals in the year ahead.
