Bologna Named Italy's Top University for Sustainability

The University of Bologna just earned a title that proves ancient institutions can lead modern revolutions. For the seventh consecutive year, Italy's oldest university has been named the nation's top institution for sustainable development.

The recognition comes from the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings, which measures how universities worldwide contribute to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Out of 1,603 universities evaluated globally, Bologna shares Italy's first place with Politecnico di Milano.

The university's most impressive achievement came in Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, where it jumped eight spots to claim 19th place worldwide and first in Italy. This reflects Bologna's commitment to turning research into real-world solutions through partnerships with businesses and technology transfer programs.

Bologna also earned Italy's top position in four additional categories: Quality Education, Climate Action, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. The university placed 44th globally for Peace and Justice, landing in the top 50 institutions worldwide for building fairer societies.

"For the University of Bologna, sustainability is not simply a goal to pursue; it is an integral part of its identity," said Rector Giovanni Molari. He emphasized that the rankings demonstrate the university's full commitment to creating a fairer and more sustainable future.

Founded in 1088, the University of Bologna holds the distinction of being the world's oldest continuously operating university. Now it's proving that centuries of knowledge can power cutting-edge solutions to humanity's most pressing challenges.
