Bolt Lets 900M ChatGPT Users Book Rides Across Africa

Imagine planning your entire evening in one chat conversation instead of juggling five different apps. That future just arrived for 900 million ChatGPT users worldwide, including millions across Africa where Bolt operates in more than 90 cities across eight countries.

The Estonia-based mobility platform launched a ChatGPT integration that lets people search for rides, compare prices, and book transportation through simple prompts. Users can ask the AI assistant for a ride, see fare estimates and pickup times, then complete their booking seamlessly in the Bolt app.

The timing couldn't be better. Recent surveys show that 62% of Nigerians and 51% of South Africans now use AI tools for daily tasks like planning trips and organizing routines. ChatGPT adoption is growing faster in Africa and Asia than anywhere else in the world.

"People don't plan their evening in five different apps anymore," said Caroline Wanjihia, Bolt's regional director for rides operations in Africa and Southeast Asia. "A lot of that planning happens in one conversation with AI now."

The process works smoothly. After enabling Bolt in ChatGPT's plugins directory, riders simply type their request. ChatGPT responds with available ride categories, fare estimates, arrival times, and suggested pickup spots. One tap launches the Bolt app with everything pre-filled, ready to confirm.

The Ripple Effect

This integration opens Bolt's service to ChatGPT's massive user base while tapping into Africa's ride-hailing market, expected to reach $3.25 billion by 2031. It arrives as the continent's transportation industry matures through important regulatory changes.

South Africa recently recognized ride-hailing as formal public transport, introducing safety measures like mandatory panic buttons and vehicle branding. Kenya proposed regulations to guarantee drivers minimum payment per trip, potentially raising base fares to better support drivers.

Bolt plans to bring payments directly into ChatGPT soon, allowing users to complete the entire booking without leaving the AI assistant. For now, existing payment methods in the Bolt app handle transactions as usual.

The innovation reflects how AI is quietly transforming everyday life across Africa. What once required opening multiple apps, comparing options, and manual data entry now happens through natural conversation. Technology isn't just advancing; it's becoming genuinely helpful.
