Community water and sanitation infrastructure in Botswana supporting public health improvements

Botswana Targets 99% Sanitation Access Across Nation

✨ Faith Restored

Botswana is pushing to bring its sanitation coverage up to match its impressive 90% water supply rate, with government and global partners joining forces to close the gap. Already four out of five citizens have basic sanitation access, but rural communities still face challenges the country is determined to solve.

After achieving over 90% water supply coverage nationwide, Botswana is turning its focus to an equally vital goal: bringing sanitation services to the same high standard for all its citizens.

The country has made remarkable progress already. More than 80% of Botswana's population now has access to basic sanitation services, and urban areas have reached an impressive 99% coverage.

But Stanley Semetsa, director of the Department of Water and Sanitation, says it's time to accelerate. "We really need to take sanitation to another level," he told stakeholders at a recent forum in Gaborone, the capital city.

The gap between urban and rural access reveals the challenge ahead. While city dwellers enjoy near-universal sanitation coverage, rural and remote communities still struggle with access due to Botswana's unique geography: vast distances between settlements, water scarcity, and aging infrastructure.

The government isn't tackling this alone. The World Bank has partnered with Botswana's water sector for nearly a decade, supporting both projects and policy development.

Liang Wang, the World Bank's country representative, emphasized that effective sanitation systems deliver benefits far beyond basic hygiene. "When sanitation systems function effectively, the benefits extend to protection of water resources and broader economic development," he explained.

The Ripple Effect

Better sanitation means healthier communities, which means children miss fewer school days and adults can work more productively. Clean water sources stay protected from contamination, benefiting both people and the environment.

When urban sanitation systems are properly managed and maintained, they can handle population growth and climate pressures without breaking down. That stability creates a foundation for economic development and improved quality of life across generations.

Botswana already has strong policy frameworks in place, including a National Policy on Sanitation and Wastewater developed in the early 2000s. Now stakeholders from government ministries, researchers, service providers, and development partners are working together to turn those policies into action.

The recent stakeholder forum brought everyone to the table with one goal: develop practical action plans to expand access, improve infrastructure management, and strengthen coordination. The theme says it all: Advancing Sanitation Management and Service Delivery for a Healthier Botswana.

With clear targets, strong partnerships, and proven success in water supply coverage, Botswana is showing how focused attention and collaboration can close infrastructure gaps and improve lives nationwide.
