Boy Thinks Solar Eclipse Is a Video: 'Is This Real Life?

A young boy watching this week's total solar eclipse over the Mediterranean Sea had trouble accepting what he was seeing was real, and honestly, who could blame him?

Julia Rioboo was among crowds gathered in Mallorca, Spain, to witness the rare celestial event when she accidentally recorded a conversation between what appeared to be a father and son. As the moon crossed between Earth and the sun, creating a ring of fire in the darkened sky, the boy's reaction was pure wonder mixed with disbelief.

"Crazy, isn't it?" the father said as the shadow spread across the sky. The boy responded with a question that stopped everyone in their tracks: "In real life?"

When his dad confirmed it was real, the boy pushed back. "I think it's a video," he insisted, unable to process the surreal scene unfolding before his eyes.

The father patiently explained that they were watching the actual sun with the moon passing in front of it. But the boy wasn't convinced. "No, it has to be a video," he said again.

Then something clicked. "Wow," the boy said, his voice filled with amazement. "I've never seen this before."

His father urged him to keep watching as the moon's shadow completely enveloped the sky. "It's so close to the sun. Come on, no way," the boy marveled.

Rioboo explained the boy's confusion made perfect sense. He was viewing the eclipse through specialized glasses that darken everything except the sun, creating an effect that could easily resemble watching through a screen. "That's why he actually thought it was a video," she said.

Even adults struggled to process what they were witnessing. "It was very surreal, to be honest," Rioboo added.

The total solar eclipse graced parts of Iceland, northern Russia, Greenland, Spain, and Portugal this week. Language teacher Rosa Celiberti, who also watched from Spain with tears streaming down her face, told reporters that no photo or video comes close to the real experience.
