Spain Gives Away 2 Million Free Eclipse Glasses

Spain is making sure nobody misses the total solar eclipse sweeping across the country on August 12, and nobody damages their eyes watching it.

The Spanish Ministry of Science and the ONCE foundation are distributing two million pairs of certified eclipse glasses completely free. People can pick them up at ONCE outlets, research centers, science museums, and other public institutions throughout Spain.

This is the first total solar eclipse visible from Spain in over a century. The moon's shadow will race across the Iberian Peninsula, plunging parts of the country into complete darkness for up to one minute and 48 seconds.

But watching without proper protection can cause permanent eye damage. Regular sunglasses won't cut it. They let through hundreds or thousands of times more light than is safe for looking directly at the sun.

The free glasses meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. They block all but 0.00032% of visible sunlight, along with harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation that can damage the eye's photoreceptors and retina.

Without proper protection, viewers risk solar retinopathy. Symptoms include blurred vision, blind spots, distorted perception of shapes, and severe light sensitivity that can trigger headaches. These effects may not appear immediately, making the damage especially dangerous.

The Ministry of Science offers clear instructions for safe viewing. Put the glasses on before looking at the sun, watch for only a few seconds at a time, then look away and take breaks between observations. Never remove the glasses while still looking upward.

During the brief period of totality, when the moon completely covers the sun's bright surface, observers along the path can safely remove their glasses. That magical window lasts less than two minutes anywhere in Spain.
