Bradford Fans Get Wrestling Before Football Matches

Football fans in Bradford are about to discover that sometimes the best warm-up for a match isn't just a pint at the pub.

Bradford City supporters heading to Saturday's EFL Cup game against Rochdale will be treated to live wrestling matches at Darley Street Market before kickoff. Kingdom Wrestling, based in nearby Shipley, will stage bouts in the market's outdoor courtyard starting at 3 p.m.

The wrestling entertainment is part of the Bantams in the Courtyard FanZone, a city council initiative that proved wildly popular during its trial run last season. The FanZone will return before every Saturday home game with a 3 p.m. kickoff throughout the season.

"The Bantams FanZones proved really popular last season with people coming together and enjoying the live music and entertainment," said Councillor Ian Walker, executive member for neighbourhoods and communities. The goal is simple: create a pre-match ritual that brings the community together.

The Ripple Effect

This creative mashup of sports and entertainment reflects Bradford's broader transformation into a vibrant community hub. Darley Street Market itself represents the city's commitment to creating gathering spaces that bring people together.

The market earned recognition as the UK's best food market in February, just six months after opening. The National Association of British Markets called it a "bold, modern food destination."

Kingdom Wrestling has already shown its versatility by bringing entertainment to unexpected places. In July, the group staged a Read-a-Slam event at Keighley Library as part of the National Year of Reading programme, proving that body slams and books can coexist.

The FanZone offers more than just wrestling. The market features a licensed bar and food vendors, turning match day into an all-day celebration for families and fans.
