Brazil Cattle Study Cuts Methane 50% With New Feed Additive

Cows might soon become much kinder to our climate, thanks to a simple addition to their daily meals.

Minerva Foods and Australian climate tech company Rumin8 just announced stunning results from a 120-day study with Brazilian cattle. Cows that received a special feed additive cut their methane emissions by over 50% compared to cows eating regular feed. Even better, they needed 5% less food to gain the same weight.

The research took place at the University of São Paulo's prestigious agricultural college, where scientists studied Nellore cattle under conditions designed to mimic real commercial feedlots. They tested 80 bulls in individual pens for precise measurements, plus another 200 in group settings to see how the additive would work at commercial scale.

The numbers tell an impressive story. Methane intensity dropped from 77.2 grams per kilogram of weight gained down to just 39.6 grams. Over the full trial, researchers estimate the additive prevented 29.8 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions from entering the atmosphere.

Brazil faces a unique challenge and opportunity here. The country operates the world's largest commercial cattle herd, making beef production a major source of greenhouse gases. At the same time, Brazil exports more beef than any other South American country, giving solutions developed here global reach.

The timing matters too. Agriculture companies and certification specialists including Athian and FoodChain ID are now independently verifying these results, a crucial step toward bringing the technology to market.

This study shows environmental solutions don't have to come with trade-offs. The cattle actually performed better while producing less methane, proving that sustainability and productivity can work hand in hand. Farmers won't have to choose between their bottom line and the planet.

Rumin8 CEO David Messina called the partnership an important step toward scaling methane-reducing technologies where they're needed most. Researchers at the university said the additive now ranks among the most promising methane reduction strategies they've evaluated.

Commercial feedlots across Brazil typically feed cattle a mix of 12% roughage and 88% concentrate, mostly ground corn. The additive works within this existing system, requiring no major operational changes.

The collaboration between a major food company, a climate tech startup, and a respected research institution shows how innovation happens when different players unite around a common goal.
