US Clean Energy Hits Record 17.1GW in Single Quarter

The United States just shattered its clean energy record, installing 17.1 gigawatts of solar, wind, and battery power in three months. That's enough electricity to keep the lights on in every home from California to Ohio.

The second quarter of 2026 brought the biggest clean energy boom America has ever seen during April through June. New installations jumped 45% compared to the same period last year, proving that renewable energy has moved from fringe experiment to unstoppable force.

Solar panels led the charge, accounting for nearly half of all new capacity with 7.4 gigawatts installed. Wind turbines contributed almost 5 gigawatts, while massive battery systems added another 4.7 gigawatts to store all that clean power for cloudy days and calm nights.

Texas got a stunning new landmark when Repsol flipped the switch on the 650-megawatt Pinnington Solar project. It's now the largest solar farm in the Lone Star State and second biggest in the entire nation, sprawling across Jack County like a gleaming sea of panels.

New Mexico stole the spotlight by adding more clean power than any other state, including a jaw-dropping 3.65-gigawatt wind project called SunZia. That single wind farm made up nearly three quarters of all wind capacity added nationwide during the quarter.

American businesses are hungry for more clean energy too. Companies signed power purchase agreements for 10.9 gigawatts in the second quarter alone, marking a 34% jump from last year and setting a new record for spring contracts.

The Ripple Effect

The momentum isn't slowing down anytime soon. The pipeline of clean energy projects waiting to break ground reached 205 gigawatts by summer's end, with solar projects planned in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.

Construction crews started building 130 new clean power projects across 26 states during the quarter, representing nearly 14 gigawatts of future capacity. Texas led with 4.8 gigawatts under construction, followed by Georgia's 3.1 gigawatts, showing that clean energy growth spans both red and blue states.

The American Clean Power Association says clean energy now powers 83.2 million homes nationwide, a milestone that seemed impossible just a decade ago. Investment keeps pouring in too, with tax credit transfers hitting $21 billion in the first half of 2026 alone.
