Google Powers 629 MW of Clean Energy in Finland

Google is doubling down on its clean energy promise in Finland with a long-term power purchase agreement that's bringing serious wind power to the grid.

The tech giant signed a deal with Suomen Hyötytuuli, one of Finland's largest wind power operators, to buy electricity from the Alajoki-Peuralinna wind farm. Located in the municipalities of Perho and Kyyjärvi, the farm's 14 turbines started spinning in April 2025 and generate an estimated 250 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually.

That's enough clean power to make a real dent in Finland's energy needs. The agreement brings Google's total renewable energy capacity in the Nordic nation to 629 megawatts after 15 years of operations in the country.

"Google has operated in Finland for 15 years and worked closely with local energy producers to bring new clean energy onto the grid," said Aris Karcianis, Google's Head of Clean Energy and Power for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He emphasized that deploying new clean capacity will remain central to Google's strategy as its Finnish operations expand.

The timing matters for Finland's energy security. The wind farm is designed to boost domestic electricity supply at a moment when energy independence has become critical for European nations.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership creates wins beyond the megawatts. For Suomen Hyötytuuli, long-term power purchase agreements like this one make renewable energy investments financially viable, unlocking projects that might otherwise never get built.

"As one of Finland's largest wind power operators, we consider PPAs important for enabling renewable energy investments," said Jaakko Kleemola, the company's CEO. He noted they're actively seeking new long-term agreements to accelerate Finland's clean energy transition.

The collaboration extends beyond just buying power. Google and Suomen Hyötytuuli are developing ancillary services to add flexibility to the wind farm's operations while supporting grid stability and reliability.

Google's investment plan for Finland includes data centers and energy infrastructure across four municipalities: Hamina, Muhos, Vaala, and Kajaani. Each facility will benefit from the clean electricity flowing from partnerships like this one, ensuring the company's growing digital operations run on renewable power while creating opportunities for Finnish energy producers.
