Chinese Factory Hits 100% Renewable Power, Earns Top Rating

Jinko ESS's factory in Haining, China, has become a blueprint for zero-carbon manufacturing after earning a rare Type I Three-Star rating from international certifier TÜV Rheinland. The facility now runs on 100% renewable electricity, proving that large-scale green manufacturing isn't just possible but profitable.

The factory didn't get there overnight. The company built a massive 12-megawatt solar plant across its rooftops, covering nearly 200,000 square feet. That solar array now generates almost 19% of the factory's electricity needs, with the rest coming from purchased green power and renewable energy certificates.

But clean energy is only part of the story. The factory installed smart systems that track every watt of power and every gram of carbon emissions in real time. These digital tools help managers spot waste and optimize energy use across production lines.

The company also tackled the smaller wins that add up. Workers recovered waste heat from equipment, saving 466 tonnes of steam in 2025 alone. They switched cooling systems to save nearly 93,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Every lightbulb in the facility is now energy-efficient.

Beyond the factory walls, Jinko ESS redesigned its packaging to use recycled materials and reusable containers. That simple change eliminated the need for 7,488 cardboard boxes and 2,496 wooden pallets last year. The company now works with suppliers to help them measure and reduce their own carbon footprints.

For emissions the factory couldn't eliminate through efficiency and renewable power, managers purchased carbon offsets covering 50% of remaining greenhouse gases. That brought total 2025 emissions down to half of what similar factories typically produce.

The Ripple Effect

This certification matters beyond one factory's walls. Jinko ESS makes energy storage systems, the batteries that help solar and wind power work when the sun isn't shining or wind isn't blowing. Manufacturing those climate solutions with renewable energy creates a virtuous cycle where clean energy enables more clean energy.

The factory's success also shows other manufacturers a roadmap. The company documented 17 specific steps other facilities can follow, from installing solar panels to digitizing energy tracking. China leads the world in manufacturing, so proving these methods work at scale could inspire thousands of similar transformations.

Now other battery makers and industrial facilities have proof that zero-carbon manufacturing isn't science fiction. It's happening today in a real factory making real products that ship around the world.
