Brazil Orders Land Return for Indigenous Group After Genocide

After 70 years of fighting for justice, an Indigenous community in Brazil is finally going home. A federal court has given the government two years to recognize the traditional territory of the Kajkwakratxi-Tapayuna people in Mato Grosso state.

"It is a decision we have dreamed about, and we are now celebrating this victory," said Yaiku Suya Tapayuna, a community leader. The court ruling also requires Brazil to issue a public apology and pay $2 million in damages to the community.

The Kajkwakratxi-Tapayuna people endured unimaginable horrors starting in 1953. Armed attackers massacred community members and left poisoned sugar and meat for them to find. In 1969, a poorly planned government visit brought influenza that devastated the population.

Survivors were forcibly removed from their land and transported in animal trucks, then flown 250 miles away to another reserve. Officials promised the move was temporary, but it was a lie. In 1976, the government declared their land abandoned and started selling it to private owners.

Federal Judge Pablo Kipper Aguilar reviewed decades of evidence documenting what a parliamentary commission called genocide. His decision recognizes this was a deliberate campaign to steal Indigenous land through violence and deception.
