Large exhibition hall filled with solar panels and battery storage systems at Brazil trade show

Brazil's Solar Industry Bets Big on Energy Storage

🤯 Mind Blown

Brazil's solar sector is pivoting to energy storage as companies prepare for groundbreaking battery auctions that could unlock up to 5 GW of new demand. Major solar manufacturers are racing to form local partnerships ahead of December's capacity auction.

Brazil's solar industry is finding new energy in an unexpected place: batteries that store sunshine for later.

At Intersolar South America 2026 in São Paulo, the shift was impossible to miss. Solar giants like Trina, Jinko, JA Solar and Risen all showcased battery storage systems alongside their traditional solar panels. The event's battery pavilion grew 30% larger than last year, with over 50,000 visitors exploring the latest innovations.

The timing couldn't be better. Brazil's solar market has cooled after years of explosive growth, dropping from 16 GW of new installations in 2024 to an expected 10 GW in 2026. But batteries offer a lifeline.

December's first-ever national battery capacity auction is driving the excitement. The Brazilian Energy Storage Solutions Association predicts demand could reach 4 to 5 GW, creating a massive new market almost overnight.

"Being there on the first day of the auction, Dec. 2, is key," Mariana Goudel of Trina Storage told industry reporters. International suppliers are scrambling to form partnerships with Brazilian manufacturers to meet local content requirements.

CATL strengthened its partnership with Brazilian company Moura, while Jinko ESS signed an agreement with UCB. The race is on to secure a piece of this emerging market.

The Ripple Effect

The battery boom could solve multiple challenges at once. Stored solar energy can power homes and businesses during evening peak hours, making renewable energy more reliable. Rural communities without grid access are gaining electricity through solar-plus-storage systems for the first time.

Commercial and industrial customers are already embracing batteries for energy management, with leading suppliers selling between 40 and 100 megawatt-hours monthly. Over 500 MWh of storage systems sold in just the first quarter of this year.

The solar industry association ABsolar sees batteries as one of three keys to reigniting growth. They're also pushing to attract data centers and green hydrogen plants that need clean, constant power. One bright sign: Jinko recently secured a 413 MW deal to supply a solar project powering new data centers.

Electric vehicle charging is another growth opportunity. Over 270,000 electrified vehicles joined Brazilian roads in the first seven months alone, bringing the national total to 700,000. Solar companies are diversifying into charging infrastructure.

The three-day event brought together over 500 exhibitors across solar, storage, energy management and electric mobility sectors. The electric mobility section doubled in size from last year, showing where the industry sees its future.

Brazil's solar industry isn't fading; it's evolving into something more complete and resilient.
